World Malaria Day 2008 to be celebrated in Awassa, Ethiopia
17 April 2008
The theme of the 2008 WMD is “MALARIA- A DISEASE WITHOUT BORDERS”, and the slogan is: “UNITE TO COMBAT MALARIA”. The focus of this year’s WMD will, therefore, be on the need to recognize malaria as a threat to humanity whether one lives in developed country or lives in developing country and hence, the need to work in partnership to reverse the progression of malaria. It is a call to all stakeholders in the fight against malaria in the world, regions- communities, governments at all levels, NGOs, research institutions, private sector, development partners, and others - that the fight against malaria can only be won if we all work together. The WMD is one such occasion aimed at raising awareness and understanding on the health and socio-economic problems caused by malaria, efforts that should be done to its prevention and control and to maintain sustained support and commitment from communities, governments, donors, partners, civil society, research and academic institutions and the private sector.
