World Malaria Day 2009

World Malaria Day (WMD) 2009 is going to be celebrated for the second time in the world and Ethiopia too with a theme of “Counting Malaria Out”, “WOUBAN BEGARRA ENASWEGED”.
The previous year’s WMD 2008 was celebrated in Hawassa town, SNNPRS and back to back an Annual Review Meeting (ARM) on national malaria program was also conducted. In the ARM the Malaria Control Support Team (MCST) recommended that the 2009 WMD to be celebrated in Amahara Region. Accordingly, Amahara Regional Health Bureau selected Kombolcha town to be the venue for this year’s WMD.
Proposed Activities for the Celebration of WMD 2009 are as follows:
- Social Mobilizations for 30 days in 30 towns using mobile van (2 weeks prior to WMD and 2 weeks post WMD)
- Press conference and Panel Discussion: This will take place in Addis on the 22nd April, Bahar Dar on the 21st April, and Hawassa on the 25th of April
- Pre-WMD meeting at Kombolcha town, Amahar Region and site visits
- Media people (CMAME Meeting) on the 24th of April at Kombolcha town
- Exhibition
- Competitions: Soccer, athletes, swimming, question and answer, bicycle, etc.
- Traditional music shows
- Circus
- Drams
- Key note addresses
- Awards/prizes
- Multi-species RDTs sensitization
- Maltra launching
